Educational Psychologists

Fiona McArthur and Kim Whitehead

Our educational psychologists make visits to our schools regularly.  Their role is to assist and help children experiencing barriers to their learning, by providing advice and consultation, through working with teachers, staff and parents. The educational psychologist can be involved in consultation around general issues that may arise regarding particular children.

The educational psychologist will not undertake formal assessment, or meet with your child, without your prior consent and this will be discussed with you by the school. Where consent is given, the school will keep you up to date with the support on offer, any needs that are identified and the educational psychologist’s role in supporting your child. Other school staff may become involved in supporting your child and, again, this will also be discussed with you as part of the process.

School Nurse

Laura Nicol

Our school nurse is in the school on a Monday and Wednesday supporting children and young people who have a range of complex and long-term health needs. The school nurse works with other professionals to keep children safe, support local safeguarding arrangements, and ensure that the voice of the child is considered.

She also supports holistic assessment of children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing needs, and providing mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention approaches, carrying out health assessments to identify risk-taking behaviours and supporting children to keep safe.

The role involves working in consultation supporting development and delivery of relationships and health education in education. Finally our nurse has a role to play helping children and young people to develop a knowledge of self-care, autonomy and decision making, including how to access health services.
